“Decarbonisation and Investments”
Although Mediterranean countries contribute moderately (about 6%) to global greenhouse gas emissions, the region is a climate change hotspot where GHG emissions have quadrupled in the last 60 years.
An unprecedented increase in public and private investments will be necessary to successfully put countries on the pathway towards net-zero emissions.
As far as emerging and developing economies are concerned, annual capital spending on clean energy is estimated to increase above USD 1 trillion by the end of the 2020s. According to OME estimates, some 230 billion Euros will be needed by 2050 to implement efficiency measures and low-carbon technologies, primarily renewables, to foster energy transition in the Med area.
Such a surge can bring major economic and social benefits, on the other hand it will require far-reaching efforts to improve the domestic environment for clean energy investment in combination with international efforts to accelerate inflows of capital.
The aim of the Panel is to discuss how to fund the energy transition in the Mediterranean and which are the priorities to foster decarbonization and development.
