The Role of Innovation in the Energy Industry
The panel will focus on innovation as the ability to create value in the economy by improving existing processes or creating new ones. Technological innovation does not evolve on its own: market structure, public support for entrepreneurship and direct public investment influence how quickly new technologies emerge and are adopted. This is as true for energy as it is for other sectors of the economy, fundamental to putting the world on a sustainable energy path.

TECHNICAL SESSION
Subsurface & Storage
CHAIRPERSONS:
Christoforo Benetatos, Politecnico of Turin
Dario Viberti, Politecnico of Turin
The session will cover cutting-edge research and applications in subsurface storage and CO2 mineralization. Topics include laboratory experiments and geochemical models for CO2 mineralization in basalts, as well as the potential of the Lattice Boltzmann Method for understanding underground fluid storage at the microscale. The carbon mineralization potential in Italy will be examined, alongside investigations into pore-scale phenomena for underground gas storage using micromodels. Additionally, the session will address reducing reservoir uncertainty in the Pre and Post-Messinian Outer Offshore Nile Delta and explore the use of expandable steel patches for efficient zonal isolation in Egypt’s first application of the technology.

Sustainable Intermodality: Land and Sea Freight
The transport sector is still responsible for 25 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. A diversification of sectoral solutions and alliances is needed to accelerate the path to sustainable mobility. Mobility hubs, such as ports, play a key role in facilitating global trade and logistics connecting countries and continents. The aim of the expert group is to discuss and study all possible levers to ensure sustainable mobility for all and security of supply.

The Role of Local Territories in the Transition: Ports, Industrial Districts, Decarbonization Projects
Energy transition is best enabled at a local scale by exploiting synergies among industrial districts through decarbonization (both renewable and CCUS) projects and ports that need to go green. Working on a territorial scale can be a very effective way to contain costs, create jobs, breathe new life into businesses that need to transform and, this way, foster a fairer and more inclusive transition. Ravenna, already nationally recognised as Italy's energy capital, is undergoing a substantial infrastructural transformation throughout its pole that will put this territory at the forefront of the transition path. Case studies from the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean will be discussed along with the transformation of the Ravenna hub and placed in a broader transnational context.

The Role of Local Territories in the Transition: Ports, Industrial Districts, Decarbonization Projects
